The ability to apply intelligent curiosity and make sense of  a wide range of dilemmas is what makes Carolyne stand out from the crowd.

A fully qualified architect, she graduated from Bristol and Cardiff after seven years study. Within eight years – and with a PhD secured – Carolyne opened her own practice specialising in environmentally friendly projects, one of the first in the southwest. This was an interesting and brave move as green issues resonated far less in the public conscience in the early nineties. She continues to be fascinated by Architecture and is a part time studio teacher at Portsmouth University School of Architecture.

Seeking a change in direction she re-trained as an independent facilitator and now assists in managing change in communities, often dealing with major architectural issues where the impact on the community needs to be understood, quantified and communicated. Her wide experience of working with all sorts of people on complex situations is currently being used to advise at board level on an NHS Hospital Trust where she is a Non-Executive Director.

Carolyne is challenged by new situations and opportunities, whether it’s designing eco-friendly housing, roofs made from grass, dealing with the complexity and inconsistency of planning permissions or actually building a traditional stone wall with her bare hands, she is never afraid to take the initiative. New ideas are no obstacle, and, if there’s more than one, no problem. This forward-thinking attitude lends itself to creativity which, coupled with vision and a vivid imagination, gives a degree of spontaneity to everything she approaches. Freedom and flexibility are buzzwords that characterise her attitude to work and life.

Carolyne is a natural team player and is adept at juggling work and keeping a calm head when others lose theirs. Problem-solving is challenging and satisfying and, despite setting herself difficult targets, she meets situations head on with a degree of integrity and composure that gets results. Cooperative, trustworthy and highly intelligent are three words that pop up again and again in Carolyne’s testimonials. She works to live and, when not engrossed in her work, can be found herding sheep and children, or finding something exciting to do in the great outdoors.

‘I love the thrill of going a bit too fast downhill but knowing that you are fundamentally in control.’
